The team at online fundraising site 'Fundy' are promoting a fun way to support The Mission's Foodbank this month. For more information, and to 'buy' baked beans, bread, butter, milk or eggs for our Foodbank, please visit Fundy.
Once again, The Mission are the lucky recipients of a tinned food and blanket collection wrapped up in an evening of great music at the San Francisco Bathhouse on Sunday 3 June. That's a long weekend, so if you can, get along and support this fantastic event. Free entry when you donate tinned food or blankets.

The Mission Auxiliary held yet another fabulously successful fundraiser with their screening of 'Salmon Fishing in the Yemen'. The Mission would like to thank the Committee for their extraordinary event management skills (and constant enthusiasm), Paramount for the venue and the 500 friends and supporters who helped The Mission through buying a ticket and braving a wet and wild Wellington evening to attend.

Thank you Greater Wellington for a truly amazing response to the Foodbank shortage at The Wellington City Mission. Ever since The Dominion Post published an article about this, we have been blessed with your support. We still need your daily help, but what's been given over the last two weeks has been humbling. Thank you to the individuals, families and organisations who have come in with over food items they've bought. Other Foodbanks have and will continue to benefit from your extraordinary generosity of heart and spirit. Since publishing the article, some people have expressed concerns to me that The Mission may be encouraging dependency for families that should be self-sufficient. The Mission is committed to helping people with less obtain quality of life; these food parcels are given out to families and individuals who receive our budgeting and/or social services, so the immediate pressure of providing food while they return to financial sustainability is relieved. The people you help us serve not only receive practical care and compassion, they are reconnected into the human story that we are in community together; and the measure of community is in the treatment of our least. Thank you for your inspiring support.
The Archbishop David Moxon announced on Sunday 29 April that the Reverend Justin Duckworth had been elected as the 11th Bishop of Wellington:
"I am delighted to announce that the Rev Justin Duckworth has been chosen as the next Bishop of Wellington. Justin was nominated by an Electoral College ably chaired by Bishop Richard Ellena, and Justin's nomination has since been formally confirmed by the House of Bishops and members of the General Synod. Justin, who is 44, has been at the cutting edge of mission and ministry in Wellington for 25 years. He was a co-founder and leader of Urban Vision, which runs houses in some of Wellington's neighbourhoods, in which young Christians live alongside folk from the margins. Justin and his wife Jenny also pioneered Ngatiawa, a contemporary monastery which provides a welcome to those who are struggling, those seeking prayerful retreat, and those seeking a missional lifestyle. The Electoral College clearly identified Christian lifestyle, Christian discipleship and Christian mission in Justin - and I am confident his election will challenge, invigorate and grace the church with a deep sense of the breadth and height and depth of the love of God. A date for the Ordination of Justin to the Episcopate will be announced as soon as it is known."
As Bishop of Wellington, the Reverend Justin Duckworth will become a Trustee of The Wellington City Mission. For more information on this appointment, please visit the website of the Anglican Diocese of Wellington here Anglican Diocese of Wellington.
Let us tell you about an exciting new online fundraising initiative called 'Knife and Spork'. Using modern web technology, this site aims to bring people together to cook, eat and give together ... making it easy and fun to share home cooked food with great company whilst raising money for local charities/causes. Happily, The Mission is one of the charities you can nominate to raise funds for. If you are keen to get involved, register on the Knife and Spork website, and sign up to host a meal or even join one being organised. It's easy to promote meals through Facebook as well as your own networks. All the finances are taken care of electronically so there is no money to handle, and once the meal is completed, Knife and Spork pay the host and the nominated charity. To find out more, please visit Knife and Spork.
Sadly, time for another reminder. The Mission is not The Wellington City Foodbank Service. Despite similar sounding names and the fact both organisations operate a Foodbank, The Mission is not purely a food parcel service. We also offer interconnecting support such as budget advice, counselling, advocacy, legal assistance, mentoring, emergency household resource and education. In fact, Mission food parcels are only designed to supplement a family's weekly shop - not replace it. Many of the people who receive a food parcel from The Mission only receive this emergency support whilst we work with them to pay off debt. If you are unsure who you are speaking to on the phone (we have one Telephone Fundraiser and her name is Mary), ask. When you give a donation over the phone to The Mission, 100% of your gift will be coming to us.
On a gloriously sunny Sunday, we met the first day of April with a fundraising bike ride from the Hutt into Odlins Plaza, where The Mission received a boot load of Easter Eggs for our Mission for Families clients and a cheque for $1631.00! This annual event attracts lots of riders who clearly believe in the work of The Mission through their support. Big thanks to Kim, Byron and the BRONZ team for the difference you make!

Bishop Tom Brown, retiring Bishop of Wellington, has awarded a Bishop's medal and Citation to Ruth and Paul Pretty for their kind support to the Diocese and in particular The Wellington City Mission over many years. A small ceremony was held at the Anglican Centre to mark this very special occasion on Wednesday 21 March 2012. The Prettys manage catering for The Mission's Annual Review launch and supply hundreds of gorgeous cakes, pavlovas, slices and preserves each Christmas for our service users. We are indebted to them both (and the fabulous RP Team!) for their loyal support of our work.

In March, The Mission always focuses our profile-raising endeavours on our Mission for Youth programme. This valuable Mission service provides at-risk youth with Alternative Education and socialisation skills to set them up for life. We are very proud of our Youth team and the students we support. You'll be able to read all about it in our latest Newsletter, here Mission March 2012 Newsletter.
There are lots of ways you can support The Mission through a donation, and it's easy to see through our stories and statistics the difference your donations make. Just recently, an innovative supporter asked why we didn't offer a Direct Credit facility - when indeed we do. We just weren't promoting this fact on our website - so we swiftly fixed that! Please click here if this sounds like the donation method you would like to use ... Donate by Direct Credit
Payroll giving has arrived in New Zealand and The Mission is already experiencing the generosity of those who have elected to support us through this scheme. For every $10 taken from an employee's pay package, for example, The Mission receives $15.
Read more here how Payroll Giving works and how you can support us through this great initiative.
Keep an eye on our website and we'll let you know what is happening and when. You can also register for our Mission Supporter's Newsletter by leaving your details here.
