Mission for Independence

The Mission for Independence programme provides services to address the difficulties that people experience arising from poverty.  These manifest themselves as unemployment, isolation, debt, accommodation issues, addictive behaviour and family difficulties.  The Mission uses a holistic approach offering a variety of services and supports.  Service users can access any individual part of the programme, or more complex issues can be case managed by the social work programme.

The objective of this programme is to:

a. Help clients to confront and deal with the personal issues that have contributed to their welfare dependency

b. Assist them to manage their affairs so that they can live within their means and move on to being independent.

Drop-in Centre

For those who are socially isolated, this is a friendly place to meet others and enjoy a meal, engage in safe social contact and participate in some organised activities.  For many, it is also an opportunity to build a relationship with the Mission for Independence social worker, so together we can learn about the issues at the core of their dependency.

Budget Services

This service offers practical advice, support and advocacy to assist with financial problems.  A Total Money Management programme, where The Mission manages a client's budget on their behalf, is also available to clients experiencing extreme financial difficulty.

Foodbank

Providing supplementary and emergency food assistance, this service is available from 10.30am to 3.00pm Monday to Thursday and 10.30am to 3.00pm Fridays.  The Mission's food parcels are designed to supplement - not replace - a service user's weekly grocery shop.

Personal Support

A social worker is available to listen to problems and discuss options and possibilities.  Support and assistance as an advocate is also available.

Community Link

Goods which have been donated by members of the Wellington community are redistributed to clients in need.  Goods include food, clothing, furniture and other small household items.  Please note, The Mission is not able to accept second hand electrical goods due to our Health & Safety Policy.
